The Akita Club Of Alberta began at an informal meeting of 15 or 20 Akita owners in Alberta, that all shared a common need. The need to ease the joys, sorrows, and truly unique experiences of owning our special breed. Most of us knew each other from dog shows but a show is not conducive to serious conversations...... So it all began one November Sunday in 1989.
The first meeting saw the election of our Executive and Directors for the different areas in the Province. We were a club....Although not recognized by any other than ourselves for quite some time. It was not until December of 1991 that we received recognition from the Canadian Kennel Club.
The members of our club are always looking for more information about the health concerns of our breed. So our education committee is dedicated to bringing us the latest information such as: First Aid, Nutrition. Breeding & Reproduction, Akita Specific Diseases. Training for Conformation and Obedience classes, as well as organizing our Annual Eye Clinic. Check out our health page for some great info and links.
We are a very active club. We offer our members several social functions per year: formal (Annual General meeting} and informal (potluck and barbecue meetings help to bring members together to share advice, SOCIALIZE and enjoy each others company).
It is precisely this camaraderie that makes ACA work so well. We all share a common goal... the betterment of our breed the 'AKITA'. We are fortunate enough to be able to share our lives with this noble breed, to daily receive their undying affection, to watch them as eight week old puppies grow into fourteen year old faithful companions.... who have asked only for food, shelter and lots of LOVE.
THE AKITA CLUB OF ALBERTA members abide by a strict Code or Ethics: the pride we feel in our Akita's makes this easy to abide by. Being a young club we certainly have a lot of growing to do ..and we will. But we will never outgrow the reason for our existence as a club... THE AKITA!
